Evidence Searching & Critical Appraisal

Evidence Searching

Do you want to do your own evidence or literature searching? Or are you just overwhelmed by all the resources we have available? If you need help with any of our resources, we offer training to all KGH staff. The training sessions can be one to one – at your desk or ours, or in small groups, or virtually via Teams. Training sessions available include:

• • Evidence searching on NHS Healthcare databases

• • Introduction to critical appraisal

• • Accessing e-journals and e-books

• • An in-depth look at any one of our digital resources.

Critical Appraisal

The library can help you develop your critical appraisal skills, which will enable you to be able to assess the validity of a range of studies of different types.

You can request MS Teams or in-person training for a group or 1:1 and we can help you learn the basics of critical appraisal for both quantitative and qualitative studies.

Self-directed learning

If you prefer to work through training at your own pace, we have online e-learning packages as well as a help guide to literature searching and critical appraisal. This includes videos as well as step-by-step instructions on how to conduct an effective literature search.

Staff Inductions

Staff Inductions

Do you have a new cohort of staff who could benefit from an introduction to the services and resources offered by the library? If so, then our staff can provide induction support where we deliver a bespoke overview of our services and resources. We will tailor the content of the induction session to your staffing cohorts’ specific needs, identifying and signposting them to the most relevant resources we have to offer.

Digital Literacy and Health Literacy

Health Literacy Awareness

Do you want to help your patients to better understand, access and use health information, so they can make informed decisions about their health?

Health Literacy Awareness training offers healthcare professionals an opportunity to better understand what health literacy is.

In this 1-hour session, participants will learn how health literacy affects health outcomes and primarily how limited health literacy can lead to poorer health outcomes.

You will also discover tools, techniques and resources to use in practice to support those with limited health literacy.

This course is aimed at anyone with a role in providing information to patients and carers, or who has a responsibility in planning and shaping services.

We also have an online guide to health literacy and digital literacy. This guide provides links to library resources and beyond to help you develop your health and digital literacies. 

Academic Writing

Academic Writing has a formal style and is a requirement for students and in scholarly publications. It reveals knowledge and understanding of a subject and must not be copied from elsewhere. Our online guide provides help with all aspects of academic writing, including citation, referencing, and writing for publication.
