Anatomy TV

Access is via your NHS OpenAthens account on any device,  and we have access to two modules – 3D Atlas and Functional Anatomy. We have five user licences, so we would ask that you logoff after you have finished to allow other people to log on.

Apps

We don’t have a KGH Library Service app, our website is responsively designed to work on all devices.

However, some of our resources do have apps available, and you can find these on our Library Apps page.

Article requests – journals

Need an article we don’t have access to via A-Z Journal Searching or BrowZine.  You can order a copy and we’ll obtain it for you.

Athens – NHS OpenAthens – resource log-in application

OpenAthens is a password system for access to a range of information resources purchased nationally and locally. They are free of charge, and all NHS staff and students can have one.

Binding

KGH Library offers a comb-binding service, with a 24 hour turnaround time.

Cost is £2.00 for up to 16mm depth, or £3.00 for over 16mm depth.

BMJ Best Practice – Point of Care Tool

BMJ Best Practice is a database of evidence summaries, accessible to all NHS staff and students. It also includes clinical calculators, patient information leaflets, and procedural videos.

BMJ Case Reports

BMJ Case Reports is a searchable database of case reports, accessible to KGH colleagues. KGH colleagues can also submit their own case reports for free. Contact us for our fellowship number if you wish to do this.

BNF / BNF for Children

BNF (British National Formulary) and the BNF for Children are available to holders of NHS OpenAthens accounts.

Apps for mobile devices are also available.

Book requests

If you are unable to find the title you require on the HeLM (Health Libraries Midlands) catalogue (it will check KGH stock first and give you the option to check other libraries within our Midlands Consortium – amend the drop down from KGH to All Libraries) then please contact us on the link below or via email, giving the full book details.

You can order a copy and we’ll obtain it for you.

Book – Reservation / Hold

If you need a book that is held in KGH Library or the HeLM (Health Libraries Midlands Consortium), whether it is on loan, or you simply want it put to one side for collection, you can reserve it through the catalogue using your library barcode number.

Books on Prescription – Health and Wellbeing

We have many of the titles from the Books on Prescription scheme available in our Healthy Lives collections. This is part of our Well-Being @ Work initiative.

Catalogue – searching for books

The HeLM (Health Libraries Midlands) catalogue includes all the print books held in KGH Library and all other libraries in the Midlands Consortium. (The site link will check KGH stock first and give you the option to check other libraries within our Midlands Consortium – amend the drop down from KGH to All Libraries).

As well as searching for books, you can reserve books, view your account, and make suggestions for the library.

Clinical Knowledge Summaries – CKS

Provided by NICE – Clinical Knowledge Summaries are concise, accessible summaries of current evidence for primary care professionals. There are over 370 topics to choose from.

The topics focus on the most common and significant presentations in primary care. They give trusted information to support safe decision-making and improve standards of patient care.

Colouring to de-stress

Stressed? We have a range of colouring sheets for adults and colouring pencils that you can use in the library as part of our Well-Being @ Work initiative.

Computer access

The library has PCs available to use in the ‘Digital Den’ with the Library.

Critical Appraisal

We can provide training in the basic of critical appraisal techniques to groups, and we also provide some online training resources.

Evidence searches

We can carry out searches on your behalf to identify journal articles, guidelines, systematic reviews and other material to help meet your requirements.

If your search is for coursework, we’ll ask  you to do the search yourself but we are happy to offer training on how to search and sit with you to help.

Evidence updates – Keeping up to date

Our KnowledgeShare Evidence Update service is a personalised current awareness service allowing you to receive new evidence on topics  tailored to your requirements. It covers policy documents and a range of summarised evidence, so you won’t be inundated with primary research articles, and emails are sent each fortnight.

Exam collection

KGH library has collections of revision and exam preparation books for undergraduate medical students, and postgraduate medical courses (such as PACES, MRCP, MRCS, MRCPCH etc.).

Fines

You’ll be happy to know we don’t charge fines on overdue books, unless the book is requested by someone else. In this case, we will charge £10.00 if we have to send a ‘recall’ letter.

If books, borrowed from the KGH Library Service or another Service, are not returned by their due date (or recall date, if another member is waiting to borrow) we will deduct from your next available salary, or invoice you, the full RRP of each book, without further notice!  Notifications are a courtesy only!

Health Awareness

At KGH library we have regular displays to support national or local health awareness events.

Let us know if your team would like to have a display in the library.

Health Literacy

With up to 61 per cent of the working age population in England finding it difficult to understand health and wellbeing information, many struggle to manage their health adequately.

We have a number of resources in our Health Literacy hub to support all patients and colleagues with health literacy and health literacy awareness, and can even offer health literacy awareness training for you or your team.

Healthy Lives / Health and Wellbeing

KGH Library has a Healthy Lives collections to support your own well-being and that of your family, including books on mindfulness, pregnancy, parenting, stress management, exercise and more. This is part of our Well-Being @ Work initiative.

Jigsaw Puzzle / Health and Wellbeing

We have a laminator, and we’re happy to do the laminating for you.

A4 is £1.00 and A3 is £1.50.

A laminator heat seals a poster etc. in plastic to protect it.

Leadership

The Library have well-stocked collections of books to support leadership and management in our designated Leadership Zone.

Leisure / Fiction collection

We have collections of leisure reading books in our library, that include a range of novels, biographies and non-fiction titles.We accept donations of good quality books, so please feel free to pass on to us titles you’ve enjoyed and want to share with colleagues.

Unfortunately, here in the Library we no longer have any rooms available for quiet study or 1-1 conversations.  We do have plenty of study tables available in our large library area and Digital Den.

Within PWEC are several bookable Seminar Rooms, managed by the PWEC reception – [email protected].

Mood boosting – Health and Wellbeing

We have a number of the Mood-Boosting Books selected by the Reading Agency as being uplifting titles, including novels, poetry and non-fiction. These are available as part of our Leisure Collections.

Photocopying / Printing / Scanning

The Library offers black and white photocopying and printing – A4 and A3 size.

Scanning is also available via the printer/copier/scanner

DynaMed  – clinical decision support tool available to KGH staff and students, both on and off-site, and via mobile app.  DynaMed gets you to your clinical answer faster than ever before with Anytime, Anywhere Access.  KGH Trust subscription for use by KGH NHS staff.

Our motto is ‘Find evidence fast’ and this is something we aim to deliver for every single search.  As well as research evidence we also allow clinicians to search across other content types including images, videos, patient information leaflets, educational courses and news.  the ‘Pro’ subscription is provided by HEE for all NHS staff.

Read by QxMD

Use Read by QxMD to create a personalised alerting service for journal articles, and connect to full-text if your organisation subscribes to the journal. You can link to the journal collections of KGH. Free registration required, along with an NHS OpenAthens to access full-text articles.

Reminiscence boxes

We have reminiscence boxes available in the library to help support people with dementia.

The boxes contain items to provoke memories and discussion, and have been developed in collaboration with the Dementia Lead Nurse.

They can be borrowed by staff for use in wards and departments to jog a memory and start a conversation.

Renewing your books

We provide automatic renewals, up to a total of 12 weeks of loan.

If you’ve reached your maximum number of automatic renewals and still require the items for a specific reason, we will restart the automatic renewal process, just once more, if you bring the items in to the Library for staff to see or by sending a photo of the item/s, in your possession, to our email – [email protected].

If someone else is waiting for the book, or if it has come from another library it may not be possible to renew it.

Research Hub

The Research Hub has details of publications by KGH colleagues, as well as resources to support research.

Resource searching – Databases, Journals, Books etc.

Resource Search is our one-stop search facility for a range of library resources, including books, e-books, articles, evidence resources and journals.

Returning items on loan

Books can be returned to KGH Library ‘Enquiry Desk’.  A returns letterbox is available on the right-hand side of the desk.

If the library is unstaffed, and you don’t have out-of-hours access, a book return box is available outside the Library at the foot of the steps leading to the 24/7 library access door, it is bright blue and quite large!

Royal Marsden Manual of Clinical Nursing Procedures / RMMO

As well as print copies, we also have online access to Royal Marsden Manual Online (RMMO) (provided by HEE for NHS staff) to eligible members via NHS OpenAthens. Access is also available to KGH staff via K-Net.

SPSS – Statistical software package

We host the SPSS statistics software package on behalf of the KGH Trust Research and Development Department.

We can help you quickly and easily set up  surveys or questionnaires to help your research, find out what people think about a plan, proposal or training event, or gather feedback on any topic

We’re happy to provide training in information skills, and this can be at your workplace, in the library or online.

We can also provide assistance over the phone or email if you are struggling to access information.

The Library has access to free public Wi-Fi (via ‘NHSWiFi’),

In addition to NHSWiFi, KGH staff also have access to ‘KGH-Staff-BYOD’.  Initial sign-in is required.

A whiteboard (fixed to the wall) is available within the Library.  Located in the Leadership zone.
